Understanding Education in Finland

Finish higher education institutions are notably autonomous but largely funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Therefore, the Ministry also oversees the quality of teaching carefully and the top 10% of Master’s degree graduates are selected to be university teachers in Finland. Students who study abroad in Finland can choose between two types of colleges: universities and polytechnic institutions. Universities offer intense academic knowledge and if focused on developing research whereas polytechnics (called UAS- University of Applied Sciences) are more focused on the actual practice of the particular field of study. The most popular study fields in Finland are art and design, architecture, communications, environmental science, and technology. The higher educational institutions are all internationally oriented with special regional features, and you can choose from a variety of study environments ranging from larger urban campuses to ones that are close to nature. Most higher education courses in Finland are completely subsidized by the government, resulting in no tuition fee costs for a majority of students.

Check Admissions Information

When you have found a study program that interests you, first get familiar with the admission details and application procedure in the programme description at Studyinfo.

Admissions Services of the university/UAS you are interested in can advise you on the eligibility criteria, application process and deadlines, and any documents you will need to provide as part of your application.

Apply To Programmes And For Scholarships

Start your application at Studyinfo.fi when the application period is open for the programmes you are interested in. Check the application schedule and other details with the University of your Choice. Make sure you apply in time before the deadline.

The universities offer scholarships for those non-EU/EEA students who are required to pay tuition fees. You usually apply for a scholarship from the university at the same time when you apply for admission. Wait For The Results – And Confirm Your Study Place

Waiting can be the hardest part! The universities you have applied to will inform all applicants of their admissions results and those accepted will be guided how to accept the study place offer. Be careful however not to miss the deadline for confirming the study place.

Check the result dates, confirmation deadlines and all other study-related details with the Admissions Services of the Finnish university you’ve applied to.

Prepare For Arrival

If you come from a non-EU/EEA country, you will need to apply for a student residence permit. Start you residence permit application as soon as you have received official confirmation on your admission!

Make sure you have a valid insurance, apply for housing and buy your ticket to Finland. Congratulations!

Visa Requirements For Finland

Make sure you meet the requirements for the residence permit for studies

  1. You need to be able to support yourself in Finland for the entire duration of your studies. You must have at least EUR 560 at your disposal every month to be able to pay for your accommodation, food and other needs.
  • Add to your application proof of how you will finance your stay in Finland during the first year of studies.
    • you must have 6,720 euros in your bank account when you submit the application.
  • If your studies will take less than one year, you must have 560 euros per month at your disposal.
  • If you will pay the tuition fee at a later stage, you must have the money for the tuition fee in your bank account when you submit the residence permit application.

If your educational institution supports your living in Finland, you do not necessarily need to have 560 euros per month at your disposal. Attach to your application documentation of the support your educational institution provides. Read more about income requirements.

  1. You have a study place

You can get a residence permit if you have been accepted to study at an educational institution in Finland. Your studies must lead to a vocational qualification or a degree. You may also get a residence permit for other types of studies if you have a well-founded reason for it. You cannot get a residence permit for studies to complete basic education. You have insurance

As a student, you must personally cover the costs if you become ill in Finland. In order to get a residence permit, you must take out private insurance that will cover your medical and pharmaceutical expenses.

  • Attach a certificate of insurance to your application.
  • Your insurance must be valid when you arrive in Finland.

If you have a Kela card, a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) you do not need to take out other insurance. Read more about the insurance you need, and about accepted insurance companies, on the page Insurance.
